The Knuckles are a UNESCO World Heritage biosphere reserve east of Kandy that most Sri Lanka itineraries skip entirely. Cloud forest above 1,500 metres, endemic wildlife, river crossings and trails ranging from gentle village paths to full-day ridge routes with views across the central highlands. Almost no other visitors, and the absence of tourist infrastructure is one of its best qualities.
